Dramatic psychological horror builds a home in this grouping. And, probably the biggest surprise of the whole survey shows up here! You won't believe what's at #36! (How's that for click bait?)
MICK GARRIS, WORLD PREMIERES, AND MONSTERS APLENTY AT PORTLAND HORROR FILM FESTIVAL™ JUNE 5th-8th
The Scariest Things is heading down to Austin for SXSW and The Overlook Film Festival, two of the most influential festivals in America and we are previewing them for you in Episode 7 of Spooky Time!
You love 'em. You hate 'em. You don't know where to start. You worship at their altar. All these things are true. One of the most polemic (and satisfying) devices in the horror genre -- shaky cam/found footage flics.
The Scariest Things continues the reconstruction of our Top 100 Horror Movies of All Time list! Listen in as Ian Parker once again helps host our rollout of the best of the scary. Liz, Mike, and Eric also compete to see how many of their favorite films ended up in the top 100, with the winner getting to claim the title of Mayor of Horror Tropetown! So far, it's looking pretty good for Liz. There's a little something for everyone at this point in the list, and perhaps a few movies that you might not be familiar with, though most of these are bonafide classics!
The breadth of the genre really shows up in this episode! Gateway kid horror shows up, for the first time (and not the last), plus the movie that launched "torture-porn", a couple of stellar Korean films, and a feathered gift from the Master of Suspense.
All the new buzz from your friends at The Scariest Things! Our new weekly format continues, as we do a quick session of weekly musings on happenings in horror this week! Check out Episode 2, now in both a YouTube and Podcast format!
The Horror Potluck is back! What is the potluck? It's when each of the podcasters brings a movie to the recording session and we all discuss a movie that the others selected. This time, each of us picked just one movie that we thought had a compelling reason to spend additional time dissecting. The movies we picked are: Baskin, Halloween Kills, and Tourist Trap, each of them worthy of a longer look for uniquely different reasons.
I hear a limousine pulling up! That could only mean one thing. It's time to announce the winners of the 2023 Thingy Awards! Horror's new Golden Age continues its wonderful run, as the big budget studios have arrived with new original ideas in tow, and there are a number of break-out stars emerging from the genre. Read, or listen in to our podcast for Episode 168: The 2023 Thingy Awards Show!
Happy Mothers Day! The archives of horror films are filled with great matriarchs. It's the strongest, and often the most important relationship of our lives, and the horror genre takes full advantage of all the emotional triggers of all things mommy.
Time to read some books, watch some films and play some games with The Scariest Things in Spooky Time Episode 17!
Some movies are so odd that they've only been done once, and are not at risk of being remade. Here are some of the best oddball horror movies we've seen, in Episode 46 of The Scariest Things Podcast!
Well, that was fun! 2024, though it started slow, managed to pack in quite a few worthy films. The six critics of The Scariest Things debated who deserved a spot in the top 10, and there was a wide spread of picks. There were a few standouts most of us agreed to, but to find out, you'll have to listen to the podcast!
For much of the Scariest Things crew, we are discussing horror movies from our backyard. This is our home turf. The Pacific Northwest is a suitable backdrop for horror, with its often gloomy weather, quirky urban cities, and history of cryptids. Famously, we keep it weird in the PNW, and the movies reflect these tastes.
As we exit Easter and enter Ramadan, it's a good time to explore the relationship between horror movies and religion. Whether you like your horror featuring sweaty preachers or ancient prophecies, we scour the archives for some great holy horror nuggets for you!
The Sixties is when Horror grew up. And the international scene led the way to a more sophisticated palette... for the most part. Eric and Mike break down some of our favorites from the front end of the 1960's.
When considering foreign language horror, do not sleep on Spanish productions. It's not usually the first stop in horror, with French Extremism, Italian Giallo, and J-Horror often getting the most notoriety. There are some legendary titles from Latin America that you should consider. In Episode 186, the Scariest Things gives you nine titles worthy of a watch.
The Scariest Things loves its short horror films, and we had the privilege to talk with director Tim Shechmeister who gave us our favorite horror short from the extensive roster of great shorts that played at the Portland Horror Film Festival. Check out an exclusive release of Hello? right here in this post!
The latest addition to the Portland Horror Film Festival scene arrives on August 18-20, the Queer Screams Film Festival! Filmmaker J.T. Seaton spends some quality time with Eric to describe the fabulous offerings that this festival is serving up in this exclusive Scariest Things Interview!
THIS IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
A bit of clear eyed truth here. Within our beloved horror genre, we will get subjected to some pretty lousy films. Though we believe in 2022 there were more good movies than bad, some of the bad movies really disappointed, and some had a stink that will be hard to be rid of. What movies you ask? Listen and find out in Episode 161!
Eric and Mike got a wonderful opportunity to host an on-stage conversation with genre icon, Mick Garris, live at the Hollywood Theater for the Portland Horror Film Festival! Listen up all's y'all!
Ladies and Gentlemen! Children of ALL AGES! Step right up and amaze at the sights and spectacles that are Circus and Carnival Horror. You will be thrilled! You will be astonished! You will be horrified! It is time for fun at the funhouse in Episode 164.
At Panic Fest in Kansas City, a wicked slice of horror-comedy has been ordered up in the form of an indie UK feature, When the Screaming Starts. The Scariest Things podcast crew immediately fell for this mockumentary about a Manson Family-style murder cult setting its roots in London. We were joined by the Director and Actor/Producers of the film to discuss the story of the "family" that slays together and doesn't stay together (ahem!).
Consider Feel Good Horror as a palate cleanser for those of you looking for a bit of optimism and good vibes in your horror movies. For those of you who may have followed up on our recommendations from Episode 205: Mean Horror, we're making it up to you now. Triumph over evil! Protagonists for the win! Fist pumps all around. It's time for some emotional healing through horror with Episode 206: Feel Good Horror.
We Horror fans are an odd lot. We actively seek emotional sensations that make us uncomfortable, agitated, and if done well, terrified. To say that we are adrenaline junkies testing our courage is an easy way out, and doesn't really get to the truth of things. Ashley Hirusina, a graphic artist managed in one poster, a deep but succinct analysis of why we seek the scary.
Eric and Mike pick non-movie horror properties that they want to see on the big screen!
We have now crossed over the #50 threshold! Listen to Mike and Eric eat some serious crow on air, as the jury has spoken. (And Mike and Eric are apparently wrong.)
Break out the nunchucks and bo staves, it's time to talk horror with Eastern roots. The kung-fu / martial arts sub-genre of the action-horror theme is populated with some of the wildest, most convoluted, and most colorful movies imaginable. And some of these films push past the imagination level. So let's get weird and wacky, and bring on the chop socky! Haaaaiiiiiaaaahhh!
The Worst Horror Movies of 2023. It's an unfortunate but needed exposure of what was awful in 2023. What is more unfortunate is that we had to watch these movies last year. You may consider this a warning. A red flag. But admit it, many of you like to kick a bad movie when it's down. Our advice? Kick away! You love this. We know you do.
We had so much fun recording this episode, it's a two parter! Now we get to the real hard-to-stomach material. The Bridge Too Far movies. How did our sissy chicken friends fare? Listen and find out!
