The latest addition to the Portland Horror Film Festival scene arrives on August 18-20, the Queer Screams Film Festival! Filmmaker J.T. Seaton spends some quality time with Eric to describe the fabulous offerings that this festival is serving up in this exclusive Scariest Things Interview!
The almighty George Romero has a new movie coming out in June 2021! Wait, hasn't he been dead since 2017!?!? Indeed he has, but that doesn't mean that he didn't create a mountain of content never before seen by human eyes. In the same way that Prince will be releasing albums well in to the next century, Romero may have some additional gems that have never made their way out of the crypt. Until now!
★★★★ out of ★★★★★ Much of the history of native peoples in horror film, or in this case Canada’s First Nation people, has been beset by misunderstandings, skepticism about tribal rituals, and outright racism. These troubling portrayals throughout horror’s uneven relationship with non-Euro traditions has manifested itself in a series of clumsy attempts to capture the native condition. This, in turn, has played out with mysterious and prescient shamans, strange and incomplete tribal rites, and silly depictions of day-to-day tribal life. That was the case until 2020, with the release of the superb Blood Quantum.
Walking Dead director and effects wizard, Greg Nicotero, is picking up the baton from George Romero and Stephen King, bringing a new Creepshow anthology show to Shudder! (Trailer linked here!)
CAN’T. BE. DONE. That film is sacrosanct! It’s untouchable. It’s pure perfection and should never be subject to the sleazy...
Roger Corman, James Wan, George Romero, Alfred Hitchcock, Dario Argento, Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, Tobe Hooper, Jennifer Kent, Mario Bava,...
Tina Romero is writing Queens of the Dead, a rather unusual homage to her father's legacy.
In 2020, the global pandemic gave us an interesting dynamic in film. Stripped down productions. The re-rise of independent horror. Big budget films either shelved, delayed, or cancelled all together. Last year’s horror scene definitely had a peculiar and, well, dystopian quality.
Enter 2021! The big budget films that coldly sat on the shelves for the last year, or in some cases years, or in other cases almost a half century, are now out in the theaters for us all to enjoy. And enjoy them we did! It shouldn’t be a terrible surprise that (often) the more money, time, energy, and talent you ply to your project the better quality you’ll receive in return. Mostly.
Here's some of the best from another spooky year...
★★★★ out of ★★★★★ Everyone gets old. It’s no more complicated than this little horrifying truism. The world of horror is filled with ghosts, homicidal nutcases, Pazzuzu, creepies, crawlies, and robot-monsters. But, nothing, repeat, nothing, is more frightening at the prospect of losing your mental and physical faculties and facing the sad and potential finite end of life.

★★★★ 1/2 out of ★★★★★ Vampires have been around for a long time (read: possibly forever?) and their story has been told in a weirdly limitless number of ways. Sexy vampires. Gory vampires. Child vampires. Deaf vampires. Suffice it to say, the votes are in and humanity LOVES its vampires!
Wow! The French sure know how to do it right. Not only does this film poster look nothing like the...
