Lisa Frankenstein Review (2024)

Fangoria! Woo!
Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse in Lisa Frankenstein (2024)

🩸 out of 🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸

Directed by Zelda Williams

In a genre overloaded with movies inspired by the Frankenstein story, Lisa Frankenstein fails to catch a spark.

The film’s distributor, Focus Features describes Lisa Frankenstein as “A coming of RAGE love story from acclaimed writer Diablo Cody about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.

  • Kathryn Newton as Lisa, our wannabe Delia Deitz who goes from nerdy to goth in no time at all.
  • Cole Sprouse as the dead musician, is the reanimated object of Lisa’s affection
  • Liza Soberano as Taffy, the stepsister
  • Carla Gugino as the wicked stepmother

This teen horror rom-com tried to replicate the aesthetics of Edward Scissorhands meets May, but lacked the heart, charm, and originality of either of those superior films. The jokes rarely landed, and the main performance from Newton was really bizarre. The only likable character was the “unlikable” stepsister! This film could have really used a jolt of life-giving energy. (It’s not alive!)

Lisa Frankenstein is currently showing in theaters and is now available to rent on Amazon and other VOD streaming services.
