Wow! Just Wow. What a turnout we had for the 2022 Top 100 Horror Films of All Time Jury. Seventy-Two contributors helped curate our BIG LIST by giving us their 25 favorite horror films. Fifty-four new jurors plus seventeen who we carried over as legacy jurors from the 2018 edition of this assembly. I would like to thank EVERYBODY who participated in this effort, as it is clear that there are so many great horror movies, just getting to the top 100 is a challenge.

All told there were 515 movies that got selected by the selection committee. So we still have 415 great horror movies that didn’t get onto the list. So, are these the best of the best? We’re revealing these films every week up until Halloween, so you can track them as they come out. It’s amazing that even when we’re talking about the best of the best, there will still be some movies that you may not have heard of.

A reminder of how this worked: Each juror gave us their top 25. Each #1 film was worth 25 points, the #2 film is worth 24 points, and so on down until the #25 film which gets one valuable vote. We aggregated the totals and the number one film is the one that finished the highest.

THE PROCESS

The level of entry into the top 100 this year was so much higher. In our previous edition, all it took was a movie to get into the top 100 was to be one juror’s favorite movie. (Santa Sangre, Willy Greer’s favorite movie was #94 last time, scoring 25 points, just for his #1 vote.) You’re Next, our #100 film this year appeared on five ballots and received 52 votes, meaning that even if you were a film that scored two #1 votes, (50) you would still need help. This film actually TIED with Eyes Without a Face, and the tie goes to the passion vote, and Eyes ended up as comic writer Ben Goldsmith’s #9 movie, which was higher than any ballot for You’re next, so it got the nod.

I’m happy to note that little independent films still did well. The Witch, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, House of the Devil, and many others have made the cut. And the golden age classics were not forgotten! (Though Frankenstein and King Kong sadly did not receive enough votes, two of my favorites on my list!) But just looking at the balloting, you can tell that the iconic favorites are going to do very well in this roster. There are many films that show up on 2/3 of the ballots, with many spots near the top.

The Number One Film, which I won’t yet divulge hit an amazing 902 POINTS! The Number one film from the 2018 list had a mere 387 points. Is it the same movie? You’ll have to wait and find out!

I wanted to Highlight the One Vote selections. A movie that one juror and only that juror selected. In the chart, these movies are highlighted in GREEN. I think it’s great that there will be some jurors who carry the banner for a film, and though these films will not make the cut, I thought they should get special recognition. In many cases, these are lesser-known movies. In some cases, perhaps underappreciated movies. Granted, some of these may be dubiously horror, or just plain goofy, but our illustrious selectors thought enough to vouch for them, so a round of golf claps for the ones that get a participation ribbon! (clap… clap… )

Films that show up in RED are considered to be too far outside what would be a horror or even a horror-adjacent film to be considered on the big list. I am making an exception for two films that seem somewhat questionable on the horror-or-not scale, and both of them are David Lynch films! Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Blue Velvet are both noir thrillers with a slightly fantastic edge to them, but enough of our jury picked both of those movies, they will show up in the full roster.

When reading the table, if a movie has a famous original film, and has a quality, but not-quite classic remake (Dawn of the Dead, Halloween, Suspiria) or for the films that surpass their source material (The Thing, The Fly, Invasion of the Body Snatchers) you can assume that the film listed is the more notable film. If it is NOT that film, it will have a date after it qualifying that it is the variant. And for movies that have obviously better versions (Scream, The Shining, Martyrs) you know which version we’re talking about.

There was ONE List that had all of his films in the Top 100:
Our young film school graduate and aspiring writer Michael Small went 25 for 25 on films making the top 100. Nice picking!

There were also THREE other lists that had good company, in that all of their selections had at least one other juror in agreement on all of their films: Our patron Zach Pennell, trivia host Matthew Holland, and our Facebook conversation activator Tom Carter all had lists that were in common with the rest of the jury.

There are two notably different lists.

I think both of them are 100% viable, but they weren’t just carrying a banner for their particular singular films, they brought the whole marching band with them.

Our new friend and horror author Crystal Connor, who found us at the Portland Horror Film Festival, had a roster full of European films that I honestly had never heard of. And, apparently neither did most of our jury. Her list is FASCINATING. Check it out. Five dollars says that you haven’t seen half of those movies!

Legacy Atomic Age horror fan Ingo Tants picked from one of the hardest eras in horror, and he really brought his unique appreciation for B-Movies of the Matinee to the forefront, and we thank him for letting us remember that the ’50s had some pretty wonderful if a bit cheesy movies.

Eric’s Favorite List (Besides his Own)

The list that I thought would be the most fun for me to watch from front to back, and one that had great diversity and a few really cool deep Cuts:

Horror Trivia Host Catherine Holland, who co-hosted Horror Brew Trivia with her husband Matt at a local Portland pub as The Scariest Things was just starting up. For me, some notable films include Overlord, The Final Girls, Marrowbone, Trollhunter, The Void, and Tremors… None of them made the Top 100, but I love all those movies!

#1 Picks that Didn’t Make the Cut

Speaking of Catherine Holland… she also got skunked with her #1 pick:

The Mummy (1931) Sorry Boris, she was the only one who voted!
Vargtimmen (Hour of the Wolf) Icelandic Director Elvar Gunnarson selected the Ingmar Bergman and Max Von Sydow brooding film.
Dr. Caligari (1989) My trivia teammate Gerry Hathaway picked this bizarro Max Headroom meets Videodrome eighties concoction.
Near Dark (1987) Patron Sharon Yablon selected Kathryn Bigelow’s vampire road trip film. I’m surprised nobody else picked up on this!

With as many movies that made the overall list, it is still surprising that some much-beloved movies did not get a nomination. In this list, I’m sure that there may be one or two movies that you might think “Oh man! That Totally should have made the list!” Or… maybe not. I am not listing any movies here that are less than five years old, as they have not yet had the time to become all-time classics.

Who knows when we do this again? It took the better part of four months trying to coordinate this effort. But, I think this was TOTALLY worth it.In five years or so, we will have met many new people, and our jury may turn over the next time, but there are movies that given a bit of time may eventually be respected enough to make a run at the Top 100. Some of these films have already gotten a few votes, but in the future, they might pick up a BUNCH. Word of mouth can do wonders. When you find out about our #1 film, you will understand.

Here are some top candidates for making it the next time, taking into account our personal preferences, the broad availability of the films, the cultural relevance, and the box office and streaming. And that really is a key… streaming… in this digital age, how will future movie watchers get access to great NEW movies? Shudder. Amazon. Hulu. We still recommend going to FESTIVALS to see these films, but like the VHS era that informed so much of the thinking for a previous generation, getting well curated streaming horror content will establish the popularity of the current wave of great horror films.
