Amityville-Horror

Get ready for some HOT TAKES.  This is likely to make some of you guys mad, but you know what?  These films are not as good as their reputations suggest.

“Oh…come on.  You should really see this” Well-meaning friend who doesn’t watch horror films.

“Really?” Me.

“For real! It’s super scary!”Well-meaning friend who doesn’t watch horror films.

“Really?” Me.

“Oh my gosh.  It’s scary.  There’s the thing with the girl, and the grandma, and the mirror.  And there’s a ghost, and a monster, and a slasher-killer, and a cult! Boy, it’s scary.” Well-meaning friend who doesn’t watch horror films.

“Really?” Me.

“Oh, yes. Give it a look.  You’ll be scared TO DEATH!” Well-meaning friend who doesn’t watch horror films.

“Really? Um…OK.  I’ll…uh…give it a look.” Me.

Have you ever been involved in one of these very conversations?  It doesn’t matter if the suggestion comes from your good friend, a sibling, the super-cool dude on Instagram, Roger Ebert, or the hippest horror know-it-all website — chances are they ARE WRONG!

Overrated is obviously a fairly subjective term, but sometimes when a film is so hyped, so loved, lauded, liked, and prized, it has the irreversible OVERRATED stink.  When that stink is plied to a film it’s tougher to remove than a bathtub full of blood. Sit back, be patient, and let us break down the most overrated films of all time!

  1. Hellraiser and Child’s Play gave us some great, iconic characters, but the movies themselves are pretty dated. I appreciate both for how very 80s they are, but neither are what I would call ‘good’.

I think Paranormal Activity is SUPER overrated (but then again, I loathe most of the faux-found-footage sub-genre). Yes, the last scare is brilliant, but I didn’t need to suffer through 80 minutes of non-brilliance to get to it. It would have made a good short film.
