Great Horror movies can often be a bummer. Vicious, unrelenting, and cruel films that deny us the happy ending and the victorious fist pump. Many horror fans, and a couple of the podcasters for The Scariest Things in particular, seek these films out. We are crossing bridges too far. No punch pulling. Beware and behold Episode 205: Mean Horror.
The Golden Era of Horror films shows no signs of letting up if judging by the quality of features offered up in 2019. Now it's time to talk about our favorites!
It was a great year for Horror Films, and without an individual film that was head and shoulders above the rest, making this a bit of a challenge to pick a top 10. There was a nice mix of film festival independent darlings, as well as some surprisingly good major studio offerings this year. If you haven't done so already, go listen to our favorite movies of the decade. I believe we are still in the middle of the golden age of quality horror stories.
It's the most wonderful time of the year...year end list time!
Behold, the Horror Movie Mullet: Slow-Burn Horror!
It's business (plot building) in the front, and a party (big third-act finish). You can thank Liz Williams for that analogy! The concept of the slow-burn horror movie is not new, but it is a prominent description for many contemporary horror movies. Break out the coffee, and try not to spill it in the shocking third act of Episode 162: Slow-Burn Horror!
It's not just about the movies, it's about the MOMENTS within the movies that often make the difference between memorable and forgettable. Eric looks back on his favorite scenes from 2019.
There can be little doubt that the past decade has been another wonderful golden era for horror movies. The generational change of horror voices arrived in a big way in the Teens, and horror movies have found serious purchase in both critical and popular appeal. The Scariest Things brings the WHOLE TEAM to the podcast this week, as Robert and Joseph join Mike, Liz, and Eric to promote our favorite genre offerings from the past ten years.
The Scariest Things went to the Big Easy and saw LOTS of movies, and for good measure also checked out some really cool live panels. Many of these films will be getting wide release later this summer and fall, so give a listen for a preview of what's worth checking out!
