Jessica Loren (Jessica Sula) is a rookie police officer taking the last shift at a police station that is being decommissioned. It’s the station that her father, also a cop, died at and is rumored to be haunted by a devil worshiping cult who also spent their last night on earth in the station. As the night progresses, the rookie is confronted by gruesome supernatural events and has to survive the night. Sound familiar? Well, it is! This film is a remake (and extension) of the 2014 cult classic The Last Shift.

Since 2014 there really haven’t been that many changes…the old satanic cult was lead by charismatic leader John Michael Payman but now the members of the Flock of the Low God are lead by John Michael Malum. (Was that change because we all think of another movie when we hear Paiman now?) The provenance of the rookie officer was embellished to tie her more strongly to the cult, and the violence and gore was brought up a few notches.

Unfortunately…there was really no reason to make this film and none of the additional effects or gore is really that exciting; The Last Shift is a great film and sometimes, less is more. Being a fan of the original, the new jump scares didn’t make me jump and the expansion of the cult universe just didn’t matter. Malum is not a bad movie, just an unnecessary one.

Malum will be coming to select theaters March 31, 2023. Check out the trailer below and gamers should be on the lookout for the VR survival horror game Flock of the Low Gods based on the film!
