Festival News: H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival 2023: Cthulhu at Arkham World’s Fair!

Scary DVDs! Woo!

It’s 1933. Let’s all go to the World’s Fair! The Arkham World’s Fair! Care for some squid ink on your popcorn? What’s this you ask? Don’t be shy. Come try out the latest mind-reading and shock therapy technology! Trust me, that crazy helmet contraption won’t hurt you. Much. OK, maybe a little. Just ignore that chaotic buzzing sound, and bite down on this… the experience will be… mind-blowing!

This year’s H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival has a neo-futurist space race theme. The marvels of modern technology collide with ancient relics coursing with blasphemous power. Our friends Brian and Gwen Callahan are starting up their epic-as-usual Kickstarter Campaign, for which campaign supporters can get some seriously terrific SWAG.

Here is the Kickstarter announcement with link included:

GET EXCLUSIVE PERKS IN OUR HPLFF 2023 PORTLAND, OR KICKSTARTER!

Our annual fundraising campaign is LIVE! Every year, this lets the community pledge to help the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival® take place in Portland, OR without the need for big corporate sponsors. It covers upfront expenses like theater rental, and the hundreds of myriad expenses from transportation to badge printing that go into putting on a show of this scale, hosted by two Lovecraftian horror fans and their horde of volunteers. Plus, pledging in the Kickstarter rewards you with exclusive merchandise and goodies like sculpture and art that have been made only to support this campaign by wonderful local creators.

The H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival takes place October 6-8, 2023 on all three screens of the beautiful and historic Hollywood Theatre. We also hosted the HPLFF in Providence, RI, August 18-20, and will be hosting a brand new event in Mobile, AL on November 3-5, followed by a separate streaming event December 2-3, 2023. We hope to see you there!

Pledge Now and support the festival (even if you can’t come)!

Kickstarter Press Information:

The announced feature films so fare include:

Suitable Flesh, Directed by Joe Lynch. Starring: Heather Graham, Barbara Crampton, Judah Lewis, and Jonathan Schaech. (US) REGIONAL PREMIERE

Successful psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby (Heather Graham) has brutally murdered her young patient Asa Waite (Judah Lewis). Locked up in a psych ward, she recounts to her friend Dr. Daniella Upton (Barbara Crampton) an insane, obsessive tale of erotic attraction, out-of-body experiences, ancient curses, grisly deaths and unspeakable evil. The things Elizabeth has felt, seen and done have destroyed her marriage, ruined her reputation, left bodies in her wake, and led her to a ‘kill or be killed’ desperation. If Daniella doesn’t believe her now, more deaths will follow, and Elizabeth will be forever lost. But who would believe such a mind-bending story? And worse, if it is all true, who will be left to tell it?

Frogman, Directed by Anthony Cousins. Starring: Nathan Tyoshuk and Chelsey Grant. (US) REGIONAL PREMIERE

Three friends in search of the Loveland Frogman are about to find out he is more than just a local legend.

Gods of the Deep, Directed by Charlie Steeds. Starring Derek Nelson, Makenna Guyler, Kane Surry, Tim Cartwright, Rowena Bentley, and Chris Lines (UK) WORLD PREMIERE

When a daring mission leads a deep sea submarine team into a mysterious opening on the ocean floor, they uncover a lost underwater ruin and accidentally awaken an ancient otherworldly being.

Blue Hour: The Disappearance of Nick Brandreth. Directed by
Daniel Bowhers. Starring: Morgan DeTogne, Michael Kowalski, James Kloiber, and Edware Cntini. (US) REGIONAL PREMIERE

True crime documentarian Olivia Brandreth was nine years old when her father disappeared. The official police statement was suicide though no body was ever recovered. Twenty-five years later, Olivia has returned to her childhood home to finally get closure in an unrelenting attempt to set the record straight. Blue Hour chronicles the journey of a dedicated film crew in their search to figure out what really happened that night in 1997. When conversations with family and law enforcement offer hints at a yet-to-be-explained conspiracy, an increasingly dangerous truth comes to light. One that not only puts the lives of Olivia and her team at risk but challenges the fabric of reality itself. In this genre-bending supernatural drama, Blue Hour manages to be both a thought-provoking media criticism as well as a heartwarming story of self-discovery.

Thirty-two terrific selections of Cosmic Horror short films (14 WORLD PREMIERES) will fill the festival with buzzable content blocks, which form the backbone of this festival. Eric and Mike will be at the Portland festival. Liz (and maybe Eric) may be at the Mobile festival. Stay tuned!
