Based on the Gimlet Media original podcast of the same name, The Horror of Dolores Roach is touted as, “a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, cannibalism and survival of the fittest”.

Dolores (Justina Machado) has just been released from prison after serving 16 years covering for her deadbeat boyfriend. When she returns to her Washington Heights home she finds the neighborhood completely changed but is able to take refuge at Empanada Loca, the only familiar spot on the block.

The shop is run by Luis (Alejandro Hernandez), who has always had a crush on Dolores, and he offers her a place to stay as well as a spot for her to start her business, Magic Hands massages.

When the shop’s landlord appears one day demanding rent, Dolores tries to diffuse the situation by offering her services, but when he expects more than a massage, Dolores has to defend herself and ends up accidentally killing him. Luis comes to her rescue and hides the body in the only place he can…inside the empanadas. As the public gets a taste of Luis’s new recipe, business starts to grow and so does the body count!

This series is the television equivalent of a “beach read” book. It is fun, funny, a little bit sexy and a whole lot of horror! The performances are wonderful (including some great cameos) and the episode lengths are just right. It is the perfect escape from the summer heat.

All 8 episodes of The Horror of Dolores Roach will be streaming on Amazon Prime starting this Friday, July 7, 2023. Check out the trailer below and listen to the original podcast series! The podcast has two seasons so fingers crossed we get another from Amazon and this one doesn’t go the way of Archive 81.
