The Scariest Things Podcast Episode LXXXIV: Horror Comedies!

Two great tastes that go great together: You got your horror in my comedy! You got your comedy in my horror! Something in the brain likes the yin and yang of what scares us and what makes us laugh. The Scariest Things looks for some next level movies to make you howl with laughter as much as fear.

Hello, newbies. We know who you are! We know why you are here! You fell in love with one of the famous great horror comedies: Shaun of the Dead. Young Frankenstein. Zombieland. Get Out. Ghostbusters. What We Do in the Shadows. Abbott and Costello meet the Wolfman. Am I right? You loved the gentle embrace of the comedy, but got the adrenaline rush of the horror thrills.

We get it. And we know you want more of these offerings, so we have recorded a number of recommendations for you to explore that next level. And, before you know it, you’ll be a full blown horror junkie! For the veteran horror movie warriors out there, sometimes you need a respite. Something to take the gas pedal off just a little so that you aren’t a quivering mess hiding in the corner. Bring yourself back to the surface with a good horror comedy combo!

Horror comedies are also incredibly re-watchable. The gags don’t seem to get old. A caution, though: Few things in this world are as unpleasant as a BAD horror comedy, as that tends to dredge the very bottom of the bilge of cinema. Thankskilling? Hard Pass.

No need for a laugh track here, though. These nine movies made us smile and cackle (Or chortle, or giggle, or guffaw…) And, in most all these movies there is a moment so wonderfully awful and tasteless that you groan, with a big cheese eating grin on your face. EWWWWW! (hahaha!) Pushing good taste without being offensive. Or maybe being offensive without being scandalous. This is the sub genre that can be so wrong and so right at the same time. Enjoy, folks!
