By James Newman
Ugly As Sin is the story of wrestler Nick “The Widowmaker” Bullman who is ambushed after a match by two psychotic fans who cut his face off (seriously, his entire face) leaving Nick horribly disfigured. After recovering physically, Nick is ready to get back on the mat but the CEO of the GLA, the “Global Wrestling Association” has other plans; he wants “The Widowmaker” to die and Nick to take on a new persona, “Revolto”. Nick is not about to capitalize on his tragedy so in a fit of rage he nearly kills the CEO and is banned from the GLA.
Completely broke after the lawsuit filed by GLA, Nick is living in a shithole apartment, avoiding the public who recoil when they see his face, when he gets a phone call from his daughter Melissa, who he all but abandoned when she was a kid. She asks Nick to come home to Midnight, North Carolina because her boyfriend has been murdered, her daughter Sophie is missing and he’s the only one she has left to call.
What unfolds is a no holds barred, brutal and bloody adventure as Nick searches for his granddaughter with the help of some unlikely, but incredibly likable, characters. Newman’s prose is fluid and will keep you turning the pages right up until the twist ending guaranteed to unsettle your stomach. Ugly As Sin isn’t horror with a capital “H”, but fans of Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Night Comes for Us will love it.
