Monsters, monsters, monsters!
Production company Morgan Creek Entertainment announced that they’ll be dusting off the Clive Barker [Hellraiser (1987), Candyman (1992), etc.] monsterfest, Nightbreed, and turning it into a TV series on Syfy.
Originally based on Barker’s 1988 novel, Cabal, Morgan Creek produced the 1990 movie, Nightbreed, with Clive Barker as both writer and director. The move to the small screen will be helmed by Clive Barker and writer Josh Stolberg whose writing talents have given us Piranha 3D (2010) and Jigsaw (2017) among others.
“This story has been near to my heart for many years,” Barker said. “I’m beyond thrilled that SyFy and UCP [Universal Cable Productions] are taking this journey with us and I cannot wait to see it brought to life on the screen.”
And, courtesy of Deadline Hollywood, here’s what we’ve got to look forward to:
Nightbreed explores race relations in America, only the races are Humans and Monsters. It follows a group of underground half-human/half-monsters seeking to find a new refuge and home after their original hiding place is destroyed. Leading these efforts is a recently-turned reluctant hero who not only is adjusting to his new supernatural status, but is also dealing with the grief and mystery surrounding the death of his fiancé. Will this group band together despite being hunted and persecuted by humans who find their “otherness” to be frightening?
Nightbreed (1990) the movie didn’t exactly rock the box office when it came out. With a production budget of about $11 million (USD), the movie grossed about $8.8 million domestically. Will a series format be a better fit for the story? Are you looking forward to seeing it? Let us know what you think!
