It was a great year for Horror Films, and without an individual film that was head and shoulders above the rest, making this a bit of a challenge to pick a top 10. There was a nice mix of film festival independent darlings, as well as some surprisingly good major studio offerings this year. If you haven't done so already, go listen to our favorite movies of the decade. I believe we are still in the middle of the golden age of quality horror stories.
Zombie: A corpse said to be revived by witchcraft, especially in certain African and Caribbean religions. synonyms: living dead, undead,...
Happy Women in Horror Month! In celebration of the contributions of women creators and directors, The Scariest Things invited Gwen Callahan from The Portland Horror Film Festival to discuss some of the great contributions from women behind the camera.
It's hard enough being an older actor in the movies. In horror movies, it can be exponentially harder to make an impact, but there is a new and growing trend to feature older performers in horror movies. Is it a change in the movie culture? Is the audience growing older? The truth is probably that Horror films are casting a wider demographic net than ever, and Hollywood may now recognize that audiences who grew up as teens loving their '70s cult films and '80s slasher flicks are now in their 50s and 60s... and we still love our horror!
Aaaaaand… ACTION! Here are the video clips of Mike and Eric’s Episode 60 favorite opening scenes from horror movies. Beware,...
We are celebrating the influence of the slasher movie to the horror genre by ranking them in tiers! The sheer volume of knife-wielding psycho movies is almost overwhelming, but The Scariest Things has taken the time to accumulate as many mad slasher films as we could and compared them to each other. The cool thing? If you disagree, you can shuffle the deck and make your own choices!
How hard is it for a Horror Movie to Get a Nomination? Here's a summary of all the horror films that have gotten the nod.
It's the most wonderful time of the year...year end list time!
One of our favorite annual happenings! Picking the BEST horror movie posters of the year. It’s fair to say that graphic design in 2023 came in like a little sheep, but left as a full-blown lion. From the outrageous and grotesque to the sublime and beautiful, designers really offered some interesting stuff in 2023.
What's the scariest setting in a horror movie? A graveyard? A dungeon? A basement? Nah. Try gas station. The gas station is a favorite point of conflict in a horror movie. If it shows up in your favorite horror film, you know something really bad is going to happen. Check out our dead list of how awful gas stations really are in horror movies.
Our little website has reached 3,000 viewers! Who'd a thunk it?
Care to do the Time Warp (again)? We have researched and ranked the rarest of the sub-genre, the oddball unicorn film that is the Horror Musical. Stylized, emotionally amplified, and often bafflingly strange, we have rounded (almost) all of the available horror musical titles we could find and ranked them! Sing for me! Sing my Angel of music!
By popular demand, The Scariest Crew is breaking down some franchise horror. We decided to pick three series each and rank the movies within the series. We'll be doing this again because we had so much fun comparing and contrasting the films, and there are SO MANY franchises that we weren't able to talk about.
2019 was as year that was awfully similar to its most recent astrological brethren, 2018. There were some awfully big, earnest, and well-heeled horror offerings – while at the same time, 2019 served up the weird, the indy, and the quirky in spades!
I've seen 50 found footage films. Here's my mini-takes on these films. The five best are marked with stars.
2018 had so many great horror films that this list goes to 11!
Giallo is known for many things. The flash of a killer's knife blade. Black gloves. Gordian knot mysteries and plot twists. Sexy women in lurid, compromising, and let's be fair- misogynistic situations. Salacious eye catching posters. Blood. So much blood. And, crazily evocative bordering on non-sensical titles. The Scariest Things dove deep into the Giallo well to find the best titles in the genre.
For the Best Horror Shorts of 2023, we cherry-picked our favorite short films from the festivals we attended this year. We also selected a few films from the game-changing streaming short film distributor Alter. We've got many of these full short films linked to this post. Give them a watch!
Kian Doughty is a talented young actor who just performed in and co-wrote the Justin Zimmerman short film Made You Look which premiered at the Portland Horror Film Festival, and features some fantastic creature effects from Oscar winner Chris Walas. Kian brings his youthful take on a top 25!
In 2020, the global pandemic gave us an interesting dynamic in film. Stripped down productions. The re-rise of independent horror. Big budget films either shelved, delayed, or cancelled all together. Last year’s horror scene definitely had a peculiar and, well, dystopian quality.
Enter 2021! The big budget films that coldly sat on the shelves for the last year, or in some cases years, or in other cases almost a half century, are now out in the theaters for us all to enjoy. And enjoy them we did! It shouldn’t be a terrible surprise that (often) the more money, time, energy, and talent you ply to your project the better quality you’ll receive in return. Mostly.
Here's some of the best from another spooky year...
What's the best slasher film of all time? What better way to find out by doing a bracket fight! 64 of the most notable horror films face off in a tournament-style bracket. The all-time classics you know face off against the underground fringe exploitation fare... who comes out on top? You pick!
Who is the greatest horror movie studio of them all? What production company delivers the best horror movies? The Scariest Things ranks them all, and includes all the studio horror movies for your reference.
Lets' go crazy! Forget your sequels, your prequels, your reboots. Give me something unique, and the weirder the better. Call me obsessed, as this dead list supplants one that I did three years ago, as I expand from ten movies to FIFTY. A list so big, I had to divide it into two posts! Enjoy....
Do you know everything there is to know about the Boston Strangler? Really?!?! The Boston Strangler is an incredibly complicated tapestry of lies, mistruths, deception, greed, murder, and avarice. Using beautiful early 1960s Boston as its backdrop, this story is the pure embodiment of truth always being weirder than fiction.
To celebrate this year’s most recent take on the Boston Strangler, aptly titled the Boston Strangler, the Scariest Things went back and looked at each and every film adaptation of the Boston Strangler story and ranked ‘em all!
It was a banner year for Horror Themed Films!
It's hard to believe, but we made it! The Scariest Things turned 100 episodes old, and we had some of our Patreon pals and horror media associates to celebrate with us by picking through our Horror Movie Championship Tournament, where we picked the best Horror Movie of all Time!
The breadth of the genre really shows up in this episode! Gateway kid horror shows up, for the first time (and not the last), plus the movie that launched "torture-porn", a couple of stellar Korean films, and a feathered gift from the Master of Suspense.
As Summer fades into fall, we leave the summer camps behind and prepare for the thrill and dread of millions. We're going back to school! Nooooo!!!
They're Heeeere! In a sub-genre filled with slow burn atmospherics, these ten stand out.
Big studio productions, festival gems and a TV series- they're all on my list of the best of the best in 2021.
