In the new Amazon series, Night Sky, Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons play Irene and Franklin York, a long time married couple who live in rural Illinois. Each night they go to look at the stars, but not in their backyard; buried under their garden shed is a portal that transports them to a rocky and barren but beautiful planet. One night they find a young man named Jude (Chai Hansen) on the planet and take them into their house and his presence quickly causes them to question everything they know to be true.
The performances by Spacek and Simmons are absolutely astonishing (out of this world even) and worth watching the series for, but it is the seamlessly interwoven stories of love, marriage, aging, loss and grief make this series one of a kind. The only fault I can find is that the series takes quite a while to get where it is going and may have been better as 5-6 episodes instead of 8. When it does “get to the good stuff” it leaves you longing for another season!
All 8 episodes of Night Sky will be available streaming on Amazon Prime now. It already had its intergalactic premiere when it was beamed into outer space making Prime Video the first streaming network to broadcast directly into space!
