Based on the 2013 novel The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes, Shining Girls is the story of Kirby Mazrachi (Elisabeth Moss) who after surviving a brutal attack is now just trying to get by. Getting by is made all the more difficult because sometimes things in Kirby’s life shift; her apartment changes floors, her pet cat is now a pet dog… While working in the archives for a Chicago newspaper, Kirby discovers a recent murder that shares many characteristics with her attack. She joins forces with a reporter to unravel the mystery of her altering reality and the killer’s identity.
Although only one episode was available currently for review, this show will be on my watch list. In addition to the acting chops of Elisabeth Moss, the cast also includes Amy Brenneman as Kirby’s mother and Jamie Bell as the time traveling serial killer, Harper Curtis.
The first episode of Shining Girls had its world premier at SXSW. The 8 episode series will be streaming on Apple TV+ beginning April 29, 2022 with the first 3 episodes followed by a new episode each Friday.
