Hey! Did we meet you at this year’s Wizard World in Portland, Oregon? Yes? Well, then good to see you again. If we didn’t meet you at Wizard World you can still check out the fun, fearsome, and freaky times that were had by all in this short video recap by the hyper-talented Matt Howl!
As we told you a couple months ago, our biggest take away was all the cool friends we made. True story. Horror is an awful big tent that pretty much invites anyone on in! Gore freaks, Freddy Krueger enthusiasts, Jason Voorhees enthusiasts, burgeoning horror hounds, grizzled veterans, and even other horror podcasters! We met them all and scares, laughs, good times were on tap.
Mike and Eric did two showcases for the Wizard World audience, a breakdown of the foreign horror movies that were not to be missed:
Horror From Abroad! and we touched base on movies from Argentina, Indonesia, South Korea, France, and everywhere in between. We also had an interactive workshop with the gathered fans who got to pick the Mount Rushmore of horror icons… a Mount RushHORROR, if you will. We had two comic artists render the selected icons: The Bride of Frankenstein, Michael Myers, The Xenomorph, and Pennywise. One lucky fan got to pick one of the portraits to take home with them!
One of the best things bout Wizard World were the people we met. We had some arranged meet and greets, but we also just happened to bump into fellow horror oddballs, and we got to interview them for podcast special edition recordings, live from the event floor! Some of our stellar guests included:
An interview with THE Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s stalwart, loyal, and brave sidekick. Nicholas even sang some lines from the famous “Once More With Feeling” episode for us! A short but sweet interview, where he talks about his audition for his big role. I found Brendon immensely charming, engaging, frank, and open, particularly how busy he was at the convention. Our very own Scariest Amy practically melted when Nicholas gave her a hug! Hooray for fantastic fan relations! So cool to get this opportunity, and my thanks to Max Federman and Jerry Milani for helping set this up.
Comic Author Ben Goldsmith, from Source Point Press joined us to talk about his new horror imprint, The Source Room, and the upcoming film Rottentail. Ben is a scream! He is a non-stop charisma machine, and very funny.
Lee Despain, from Dread Fright & Brew, one of TST’s Portland sister horror podcasts came by to discuss their intoxicating blend of horror movies and craft beer selections (See what I did there?) where they identify the perfect draft to go with selected horror films! Crazy!
Brandy Dixon, a professional horror make-up artist, who runs Northwest Horror Network, came dressed in full Valek the Nun garb to discuss the charitable efforts that the NHN does on behalf of (at the moment) the Oregon School for the Deaf. Horror doing right by the public! Yes sir! Brandy also has a bunch of films the works, so listen in to find out about her projects.
Here’s to hoping that Wizard World has us back for another year, another fright, and a whole bag of unanswerable trivia! In the meantime peep this great little video recap and bask in the glow of your Scariest Things Podcast pals!
