We’re just getting started in the Big Easy… the first two movies are in the bank. This is the premier...
Some gruesome hillbilly horror, a nunsploitation final girl film, and a goofy genre self-referential body count movie made up my Friday experience.
Good things come in short packages! There were some great short films in this year's Overlook Film Festival. Read on!

We have decided to do something a little different, this time: A single film analysis. We look back at one of our favorite independent horror films of the last 20 years: The House of the Devil (2009), by Director Ti West. It's a near-perfect exercise in horror story development and execution, and you can hear our rationale in this bonus podcast episode!
The Golden Era of Horror films shows no signs of letting up if judging by the quality of features offered up in 2019. Now it's time to talk about our favorites!
Do you like weddings, psychology, inheritances and people talking in Trans-Atlantic accents? Oh... and do you like classic monsters? Then listen in to Episode XXV where we discuss the rise and fall of the first age of Horror movies!
The Scariest Things went to the Big Easy and saw LOTS of movies, and for good measure also checked out some really cool live panels. Many of these films will be getting wide release later this summer and fall, so give a listen for a preview of what's worth checking out!

A powerful sequel of a beloved classic slasher movie that establishes that this franchise is perhaps the headiest and most nuanced of all the slasher movies. Director Nia DaCosta shows real visionary talent, and with co-writer Jordan Peele, adds updated depth and texture to an already fascinating urban legend.
The movie that brought meta front and center to horror, and gave an adrenaline boost to a tired slasher genre is back with its fifth installment. The movie remains meta, and brings a fresh new group of victims... I mean characters... to the screen, along with a few old familiar friends. Is it any good? For a feature this significant it takes all three of the Scariest Things Podcasters to weigh in.
This year’s “it” horror film is upon us! Sorry, Halloween Ends, you’ll have to wait your turn. The Black Phone is the long awaited horror opus directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Deliver us from Evil) and written by Joe Hill (Locke and Key, Creep Show, and NOS4RA2).
All the horror provenance is certainly there, but is the Black Phone any good? As we often do, the Scariest Things Podcast team is bringing our collective thoughts to the table to look inside this big budget spook show.

The highly anticipated return of the demonologist duo, The Warrens, has arrived on the big screen. It starts off with a ferocious roar of an opening scene, and largely holds its dramatic tension to the finish of this exorcism mystery meets courtroom drama.

The Purge series has a way of reflecting the anxieties of the moment, and the latest installment, The Forever Purge, pours gasoline on the subject of immigration and the ugly political divide within the United States. It is a ferocious dystopian view that if you squint, is frightening as to how close we are to this dark reality. Your feelings about this film may get framed largely from your political point of view.

The slow-burn folkloric feature The Seeding follows an oblivious photographer who gets trapped in the bottom of a desert crater, whose only inhabitant is a lovely young woman, and a pack of nasty feral boys preventing his escape. What do they want? What does SHE want? This was one of BiFan's Bucheon Choice film selections.

Are you a fan of obscure and cheesy cult films? Odds are, you would appreciate the efforts of Sinister Cinema, the Medford, Oregon-based distribution company that lovingly restored and distributed thousands of almost-forgotten films. This documentary from Jack Perez goes in-depth on the company that wouldn't let these films die.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is an extremely faithful reboot of the 2008 thriller of the same name. The film follows nearly beat for beat with the original, which may be a good thing, as the original was a crackerjack scare ride. However, if you are familiar with the first movie, much of the starch is taken out of it. The predictability of the jump scares and the actions diminishes the scariness of it all. If you are new to this story, then game on!

Be. Careful. What. You. Wish. For. The most quaint and playful of all the horror tropes is on full display in this masterful piece of body horror. Not your run of the mill body horror either. This is capital “B” body horror that would even make David Cronenberg blush.

If it's January, you know it's time for our Top 10 Horror Movies of 2025. You might think there is a group consensus, in a year that had so many good horror movies... but you'd be wrong! If we are honest with ourselves, most of us would identify more with the imperfect Elvira than the flawless Cinderella. Emilie Blichfeldt has produced a master class in deconstructing a modern myth. Beauty may only be skin deep, but its impact on one's self-worth can be devastating. The Ugly Stepsister is a boundary-pushing movie that is guaranteed to make you uneasy or even queasy and will leave an emotional mark on you.

Themes of madness, isolation, grief, jealousy, and demons abound in this 2018 Horror Western. A pinch of Little House on the Prairie, a dollop of The Shining, a dash of the Witch, and a splash of High Plains Drifter.

A gore-filled, action packed love letter to revenge westerns from days gone by. Entirely shot on 16MM film using gear from the 1960s making the whole film positively drip with vintage style.
