Vienna, Austria’s SLASH Filmfestival spotlights horror, science fiction, fantasy, and other genre films from around the world — both features and shorts — and the fest is now open for submissions for two outstanding events this year. Following is the official press announcement.
SLASH Filmfestival, Austria’s leading festival for Fantastic Film and the second-most heavily frequented Viennese film festival after the Viennale, has set new dates for 2021. The three-day mini festival SLASH 1/2 is postponed to June 17 to 19, 2021. The main event in fall will take place as scheduled. The twelfth edition of SLASH runs from September 23 through October 3, 2021, taking place in four cinemas with a total of five screens.

SLASH 2021 short and feature film competition
The submissions to the 12th SLASH Filmfestival are now open! Filmmakers from across the world are invited to submit their work via FilmFreeway. Both short films (30 minutes or less) and feature films (70 minutes or more) are eligible for submission. Shortlisted films will be screened during the 12th SLASH Filmfestival (September 23 through October 3).
As a Festival of Fantastic Film SLASH welcomes submissions from genres like horror, science fiction and fantasy in all forms of artistic expression and style, such as fiction, documentary, animation or experimental cinema. There are no limits regarding the country of production or the director’s/producer’s nationality.
The winner of the short film competition will be identified by popular vote after the respective screenings. The winner will be awarded with an official certificate as well as 1,000 Euros worth of prize money. The winner of the feature film competition will be identified by a jury, comprised of film professionals from the fields of directing, producing, acting, journalism et al. The winner will be awarded with an official certificate.

Past guests include Nicolas Cage, Udo Kier, Crispin Glover, Julien Maury, Béatrice Dalle, Lloyd Kaufman, Bernard Rose, Joe Dante, Jörg Buttgereit, Dario Argento, Corin Hardy, Roar Uthaug and John Waters.
SLASH joins the Méliès International Festivals Federation
Since 2020 SLASH has been an adherent member of the Méliès International Festivals Federation (MIFF). Founded more than thirty-five years ago, MIFF promotes European fantastic cinema throughout the world. As of today, the Federation has twenty-six members from twenty countries on four continents, reaching a worldwide audience of more than 800,000 each year. The member festivals work closely within the Federation network but embody diversity and individual artistic identity through their distinct programming choices. The Federation’s festivals also showcase the winners of the Méliès d’Or and Méliès d’Argent awards for best European fantastic feature and short films.
