Trailer Alert: A Quiet Place Part II

ATMOSfx! Woo!
Can they pull it off again? The monster hit (both literally and figuratively) from 2018 is back, and pretty much everyone involved before is at it again. The first full trailer has dropped.

This highly acclaimed and hugely popular film is a direct sequel to A Quiet Place, and it finds the surviving members of the Abbott family on the move, through a treacherous landscape. Emily Blunt, Milicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe are all back to tiptoe the dangerous path to reconnect with civilization. They have the benefit of knowing how to take out one of the monsters, but they are running head-long into conflict with other survivors. This has a very Walking Dead feel about it. The humans are less trustworthy than the aliens are, and trust looks hard to come by.

The opening scene for the trailer has them driving a car, and it’s hard to fathom that this is a possibility given how noisy cars are and that the town is still actively populated. I assume this is a flashback, but the age of the children suggests otherwise. Perhaps there was a momentary “quiet” period for the monsters? Who knows? It’s a fascinating bit of intel drop from Paramount, to be sure.

This looks to be Emily Blunt’s full showcase now that her husband John Krasinski is now behind the lens only, due to obvious reasons for those of us who have seen the first movie. (And if you haven’t, where have you been?) The talented veteran actors Djimon Hounsou and Cillian Murphy have prominent positions on the casting sheet, and that bodes well for a film like this.

Will this be a film like 28 Weeks Later, which extended the story, but struggled to find the pacing and story to match the iconic original? Or will it be like Aliens, and keep the ball rolling. Or will it suffer the fate of so many great horror movies with lousy sequels? Since the cast and crew remain, I am optimistic that this will hold up. If it does, full credit to all involved because this will be a monumental task. The first film certainly suggested that that film could be part of a long movie continuity, capable of extending the story, so here’s hoping for the best.

We will find out on March 20. Mark your calendars!
