Horror Movie InfoGraphics: The Psychology of Horror Films

This is why we watch!

When I was a senior in high school, a group of my friends and I decided that for our big thesis project, we would do a presentation about Horror movies.  I’m not sure that we were able to do much more than show our favorite scenes from Alien, An American Werewolf in London, and Halloween… but it did give us the chance to show R-rated movies in a classroom.  Absolutely stunning that Mr. Vanelli determined this would be OK, but maybe he was like Mr. Clark from Stranger Things, and was himself a fan. It didn’t help that I paired up with some of the brightest and most hard working kids in the class, and I believe that cut us some slack.  We were able to identify the cathartic and displacement aspects of the psychology of the genre and the endorphine rush of overcoming fear, but I think this graphic does a better summation of how the tropes affect our desire to see such terrifying things.
