The Scariest Things is proud to announce the addition of our new staff writer, Lucia Granja! Enough with all these old guys, let’s bring in some young blood!
Lucia is a recent college graduate from Occidental College, class of 2025, who has a particular fondness for international horror movies and everything related to vampires and zombies.
Finding herself turning almost every college essay into a deep dive into one horror movie or another, she joined The Scariest Things to dive even deeper into the weird and wacky stories behind your favorite horror flicks. Lucia Granja will be tearing the genre apart and (hopefully) putting it back together again with her new section “Deep Cut Horror Takes.”

The Scariest Things aims to have Lucia create more in-depth essays on the meanings and symbolism inherent in the trends and tropes of the horror genre. Stay tuned for some thoughtful analysis from an emerging authority in horror.
Lucia wrote her senior college thesis, “Watching the Sun Set: Imperialist Discourses of Othered Religion in White Zombie (1932), The Wicker Man (1973), and Midsommar (2019)“, for which she received Occidental College Department of Religious Studies’ top marks. She also wrote a Collegiate paper, “Historical Memory and Justice in Guatemala in La Llorona (2019).” If you want to read these papers, let us know! I think Lucia has offered their availability. It’s pretty deep thinking material.
Folks, she is perhaps overqualified for blog journalism! That said, we are delighted to have writers like her and Joseph Perry contributing to our work. We believe in a multitude of voices in our work. What scares us makes us more alert to the world around us, and we aim to bring that kind of analysis to our blog visitors.
