Part of the fun with this movie was identifying all of the traditional themes and tropes that Clown in a Cornfield used to build up its story.   • Lost in a corn maze. (Again, an obvious but necessary element)

  • The black guy gets it first (or nearly first)
  • The creepy rural town with a dark secret.
  • The townies are a cult.
  • Don’t trust the adults.
  • Snarky self-absorbed teens.
  • When the parents are away, throw the biggest party possible. Barn Party!
  • Detention as punishment
  • The bitchy pretty popular girl
  • The most powerful man in town is behind all the evil in town.
  • The kid resents the parent for the loss of the other parent
  • Chainsaws!
  • The car won’t start.
  • The phones don’t work. (And the characters don’t know how to use it.)
  • The dad doesn’t trust the boyfriend
  • The romantic interest turns out to be gay.
    (Wait, what? OK, that trope wasn’t in the ’80s)
