Directed by Tim Story

The horror trope of that the Black character dies first gets turned on it’s head when a group of Black friends reunite at a cabin in the woods for a Juneteenth celebration with the plan to play games and party. When a “game room” sign appears on a previously locked door, the friends find themselves trapped in a game of life or death that hinges on their knowledge of Black history, pop culture and most importantly, classic horror tropes.

With elements of Scary Movie, Scream, Saw and The Most Dangerous Game, The Blackening is a hilarious good time that calls out every trope of the genre. Unfortunately, for a self aware horror comedy, it is really light on the scares and horror! I wish it had leaned more into bloody violence because I think that could have really taken this movie up a notch. However, the performances are great, the JOKES DO NOT STOP and you will be yelling at the screen so make sure you see this movie in a packed theater.

The Blackening will be released in theaters Friday, June 16. Check out the trailer below!
