The Scariest Things Podcast Extra: An Interview with “Dexter: New Blood” Composer Pat Irwin

Dexter, the Showtime series about a serial killer (played by Michael C. Hall) who works for the Miami Police Department as a blood spatter expert ran from 2006 to 2013 over eight seasons. When the series wrapped, the end was not what the very devout (and vocal) fanbase wanted. So in 2021, Showtime brought the character back in a limited series, Dexter: New Blood.

A new setting calls for a new score

New Blood takes place 10 years after the events of the original series and moves Dexter Morgan from balmy Miami to cold and grey upstate New York. With a change of scenery also came a change in tone. The quirky, colorful tone of the original series was replaced with a more serious and somber mood and that change required a new score…Enter award-winning composed Pat Irwin!

Pat has composed scores for the television series Bored to Death, Nurse Jackie, and The Good Cop as well as a number of films. He was also in a little band called the B52s (!!!) and currently performs will his band SUSS.

Pat and Liz sat down to discuss all things Dexter: New Blood and what it takes to score a horror series.
