Trailer Alert: Crawl (2019)

ATMOSfx! Woo!

As if surviving a hurricane isn’t scary enough, now there are alligators camping in the basement in your flooded house. Worst case scenario x2 in this Alexandre Aja and Sam Raimi production.

Chomp! Chomp! We at the Scariest Things have been waiting for this one. Kaya Scoledario (Maze Runner) and Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan) are a daughter and father trapped in their Florida home, following a devastating hurricane and subsequent flood. They managed to survive that ordeal, but are now forced to deal with the horror of alligators taking up residence in their flooded house.

Now, granted, these alligators are abnormally feisty and acting more like their more aggressive crocodile cousins, but as any fan of shark horror movies will tell you, we’re here for the chomping! If you were just beaten up by a hurricane and there were some warm-blooded morsels trapped in a house, wouldn’t you get your bitey on? You betcha! That’s called a buffet!

With the pedigree of director Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes) and Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead franchise) it will come as no surprise to anyone that this is a hard R-rated movie, with lots of gore and munchy mayhem. This movie was on our most anticipated horror films of 2019, and the trailer justifies the expectations. Unlike previous alligator horror movies, like Alligator, or Lake Placid, this movie looks like it is eschewing the jokes, and going for (somewhat) plausible survival horror.

Crawl is scheduled for release on July 12. Unlike the Meg, last year’s summer chompy monster movie, this movie doesn’t look like it’s going to pull its punches and is going for the bloody jugular. It will be interesting to see how well it does at the Box Office. If it’s gory (and good) it will be a test for the genre market. Original titles like this have been doing pretty well lately.
