The Scariest Things Podcast Extra: A conversation with Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Nicholas Brendon

The Scariest Things had the good fortune at Wizard World Portland to get a quick interview with Xander Harris himself, Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Nicholas Brendon. As a bonus, Nicholas even sang for us!

Xander was the endearing everyman in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The stalwart, brave companion, and comic relief. Some of his best moments on the show were from “The Inca Mummy”, “Teachers’ Pet”, “Halloween”, “Hush” (A Classic!), “Grave” (Where he saves Willow), and the ever popular musical “Once More with Feeling.” For many fans, he was the character that would be the totem who they could associate with, the commoner amongst the powered Scoobies, and was in many ways the heart of the team.

Nicholas Brendon joined Eric and our guest host Gwen Callahan from the Portland Horror Film Festival to talk about his seven seasons on the show. (For which he had to correct me… ack!) He discusses how he got on the show and was refreshingly open and frank about his life since the show. Plus, he sang some of “I’ll never Tell”! If I was on my game, I would have followed with Anya’s line “Will I look like this when I’ve gotten old?”

A recommendation for fans, if you want a real treat, and you find a convention where he is doing a karaoke show, you should absolutely take him up on it. Why do a simple autograph signing when you can get an honest-to-God celebrity experience? I think it was only $60, which is a total steal for something like this.

Thanks again to Max Federman and Jerry Miliani for helping to set up and shepherd this interview. Nicholas was an absolute treat to have on our podcast, I could have talked with him for hours, but conventions being what they are, it was short but sweet. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the landmark genre titles of the past twenty years and will have a lasting legacy for ages, and Brendon’s Xander was a critical ingredient to the success of this production. Listen up!
