The Summer is Ended And We Are Not Yet Saved by Joey Comeau is the story of Martin an 11 year old boy whose horror makeup artist mother, Elizabeth has landed her dream job- she’s going to work on the splatter flick Blood Socket 2 (the director loved her work on Undead Hungry Grandmother Birthday Party). The only problem is the job is in Toronto and after discovering that Martin can’t stay with his grandparents for the two week shoot, Elizabeth is ready to turn down the job. However, Martin knows what a huge deal this is for his mom and he remembers his grandparents had offered to pay to send him to the bible camp his mother had attended when she was his age, so Martin packs his bags to spend 2 weeks at sleep-away camp. When he arrives, Martin is a little nervous but is also excited to make some new friends (which he does quite quickly) and he soon settles into camp life. The hormone filled teenage counselors are doing their best to help make the campers feel at home but we soon discover that camp director Father Tony has other ideas besides making s’mores and singing Kumbaya.
The book goes back and forth between emails Martin’s mom sends him while he’s away at camp about life on set in Toronto (that are all fantastic little horror stories themselves) and the real life horror movie unfolding for Martin and his bunk-mates at Bible Camp.
The Summer is Ended And We Are Not Yet Saved is visceral, bloody, and hilarious and the body count is high! It’s also the most fun I have had reading in quite a long time and I can’t wait to check out more by Joey Comeau. Read this while you’re lying in a tent under the stars.
Quick trigger warning- this is a horror novel set at a kids camp so if preteens getting killed is a bridge too far for you skip this book.
