Hey, it worked for Halloween, right?
Now that Halloween has gone through the roof, anyone who’s been sitting on rights to a horror franchise is probably daydreaming about huge piles of cash while rubbing their hands together and cackling greedily.
Case in point, Victor Miller, the screenwriter for the original Friday the 13th movie way back in 1980. After reportedly selling off his movie for less than $10,000 in the 80s, he recently won back U.S. rights to the franchise based on copyright reclamation laws. Apparently, in the United States, the Copyright Act gives authors a second chance and allows them to regain control of their creation after 35 years, if it was originally sold for a low price.
Freshly back in control of the Voorhees’ destiny, Miller took his little bundle of hockey masked joy to Vertigo Entertainment and LeBron James’ SpringHill Entertainment. While it’s still very early in the project, the group is supposedly in preliminary talks with writers and directors.
