It’s hard to write a book review when you don’t want to spoil anything about the book, so this is going to be short. The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay is one of those rare books so good that the less you know about it the better. It’s like not wanting to watch a long preview before you see a movie for fear they will give away the good parts- but lucky for you, this whole book is the good parts! This is the plot summary provided by the publisher, so I guess it is OK to share because you’ll see this on the dust jacket of your copy (seriously, just stop reading and go get a copy):
Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road.
One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, “None of what’s going to happen is your fault”. Three more strangers then arrive at the cabin carrying unidentifiable, menacing objects. As Wen sprints inside to warn her parents, Leonard calls out: “Your dads won’t want to let us in, Wen. But they have to. We need your help to save the world.”
The Cabin at the End of the World is an instant horror classic and one of the best books I have read in a very long time. From the very first pages the dread starts to creep in and as the story progresses it doesn’t let up. Tremblay develops characters that you immediately latch onto and that just adds to the tension because you truly don’t want anything bad to happen to them. As suspense builds and builds; you may need a paper bag handy in case you start hyperventilating because it is going to get stressful and you are going to get anxious. Make sure you carve out a day to read this book because once you start you are not going to want to stop; this book is a suspense thriller of the highest order. Read this book in a secluded cabin by the lake and remember, none of what’s going to happen is your fault.
