Horror Movie News: Slice Trailer

Scary DVDs! Woo!
Slice Pizza Hut_

It’s the trailer you’ve all been waiting for!  Nope.  Not Suspiria.  Not Halloween.  It’s Slice.  And it looks like a whole lot of fun.

Hipster filmmaking comes to comedy horror!  I’ll take my order with extra cheez, please. Slice is a low-key A24 production about “A ghost, a werewolf, and a pretty shitty pizza place”.  Nice!  And, did you catch that first bit?  The A24 bit?  That means it’s got some legitimate indie cred behind it, as rarely has an A24 film failed to be at least interesting.

According to A24 the summary:
“In a spooky small town, when a slew of pizza delivery boys are slain on the job, two daring survivors (Atlanta’s Zazie Beetz and Chance the Rapper in a wild film debut) set out to catch the culprits behind the cryptic crime spree.”

Yeah! Count me in.  It has a bit of low-fi deadpan and meta humor, a Repo Man for a modern audience, with a bit of the old Satanic gate action, so we all win!  Slice is teeming with hipster cred in the form of Chance the Rapper (I love his jump scare “reaction” in the trailer), and Zazie Beats stole the show as Domino in Deadpool 2, as well as being a starring in the Donald Glover production, Atlanta. The film also features Hannibal Burress (Tag and Blockers), Rae Gray (Fear the Walking Dead), and Joe Keery (Stranger Things).  The film is directed by Austin Vesely, in his feature movie premier, after directing a series of Chance the Rapper videos.  My take is that the pedigree A24 brand gives this oddball film some legitimacy, despite the green-ness of the director, and that they are the kind of creator-friendly film environment that tends to bring out the best in new directors.  After all, this is the same production house that took a chance on a short film director in Ari Aster and allowed him to produce Hereditary. Also encouraging is that A24 films will get theatrical releases, and are not destined to go straight to streaming.

Slice is Rated R, and will be arriving later this year at a date TBD.  Once we know, you know that we’ll let you know when this hits the theaters!
