Horror Movie News: Oscar Roundup: A win for Get Out… Tobe Hooper left out of In Memoriam.

ATMOSfx! Woo!
Peele Oscar

It was a good night for Get Out and The Shape of Water, but there was a noticeable omission in the In Memoriam section of the Oscars.

In an eventful night for horror films at the Oscars, Jordan Peele was awarded Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, and the Best Picture went to a Horror “cousin” film The Shape of Water, as well as Best Director for Guillermo Del Toro, Best Original Score for Alexandre Desplat, and Best Production Design.

The always interesting In Memoriam portion of the Oscars, which recognizes those who have passed away in the last year recognized the contributions of George Romero and Harry Dean Stanton, but noticeably absent was Tobe Hooper who gave us The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist, among many other genre favorites. Hooper passed away on August 26, 2017.  The Oscars may have forgotten him, but we at The Scariest Things have not.

Ironically, there was a small segment in the typical “We love movies” segment of the Oscars, which depicted Leatherface swinging his chainsaw around… so at least his film made the event.  Still… come on Academy, that’s a glaring omission.  However, in a non-genre specific award, big ups for Roger Deakins for finally getting an award for Best Cinematography.  Fourteenth time is a charm, right?  Blade Runner 2049 was an absolute stunner, and he earned this award.
