Horror Movie News: Oscar Nominations!

The Shape of Water and Get Out earn multiple nominations! The Golden Age of Horror-themes films in Full Effect!

I hinted at it yesterday in my review of The Shape of Water, and today it came to fruition.  The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences showered Guillermo Del Toro’s masterwork, garnering 13 nominations in total.  And, a true straight up horror movie got nominated for the first time since the Sixth Sense, in Jordan Peele’s remarkable social commentary meets mad scientist film, Get Out.  If either of these films wins Best Picture, it would be the first genre film (Fantasy/Horror/Superhero/Science Fiction) to win since The Return of the King.  These films join the rare company of Silence of the Lambs, The Sixth Sense, Black Swan, Jaws, and the Exorcist as horror-themed Oscar nominees.

The Shape of Water:

  • Best Picture
